Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman Family Reunion Fall Newsletter 2024
Hello
Fall has come to the Mohawk valley--- it has been chilly but dry fall,
beautiful
days and cold nights and no rain. Snells Bush Church and cemeteries look
well-keptbut work needs to done on the cemeteries and we will work on it in
done in the spring. We held the fall board meeting in October. Our next
reunion for 2025 will be held on August 24, 2025. We usually hold the
reunion the last Sunday in August but due to Labor Day on September 1,
2025, the
board felt it would be better to hold the reunion a week before on August
24, 2025. We have a handicap ramp in place, so it will be easier for
handicap members to attend the reunion. We will again hold our annual ice
cream social event on Saturday night as the locals and family members enjoy
attending to eat ice cream and view the sun setting over the valley.
It was a good move to place our patent in the Dolgeville Historical Society
Museum. The museum is open most weekends and during events held in
Dolgeville like the Violet Festival, farmers market and other events. The
museum also has class tours of children coming from Dolgeville Central
School to view the museum and see our patent. Here they can learn about the
history of Dolgeville and the Town of Manheim. We are still working on
getting some sort of library located in the loft for family genealogy, books,
newspapers files, family genealogy, files of photos. We hope to have it
available for research. Snells Bush Church has many files of memorabilia, and
we are trying to organize it into some workable system.
We are planning to place a sign on the lower Snells Bush Cemetery as there
is no sign there now. That cemetery has an interesting history as it has
had many stories told about this area called “Rothkopf’s Hollow”.These
stories were captured in a booklet by Eleanor Franz and was printed
for the Town
of Manheim Bicentennial 1997 entitled “Manheim’s Snells Bush”. The
following are the traditional haunted stories of “Rothkopf Hollow”:
first story, It is said that settlers were chopping wood and some
unfriendly Indians came by and the settlers killed the Indians by letting
the ax slip as they held the piece of wood needed to be chopped. Some how the
Indians were killed at this time and buried there.
Second story, by Corliss Timmerman called Roe cup’s Hollow. There was
cheese factory near there and some Indians bought cheese-- “white man’s
food” and ate it. The cheese was delicious and the Indian ate too much and
had a stomach acne. The Indians said it choked their “inruns bowels” and
they did not want any more cheese.
Third story, listed in Lawrence Timmerman papers, Ralph Ehle mentioned cheese
factory and a little burying ground in the southern part of Snells Bush,
there is a wooden ravine known to the natives as “Roadkopf’s Hollow” (
Rotkopf’s Hollow). According to one account the murder of a redheaded
peddler occurred here. When the more timid were frightened by strange
noises emanating from the forest, the bolder inhabitants discovered that
the sound were really caused by the wind swaying two trees which had lodged
together. According to different versions the red headed victim was a
blacksmith and the beats of the dead man’s hammer could be heard on his
anvil as one passed through the wood.”
Fourth story road haunted, “in the fall the farmers would load their
sleighs with hay to take to Albany and they would go in groups because the
little hollow was believed to be haunted by a witch and at every trip when
the farmer reached that area the sleigh would tip over. They called it Spooky
Hollow or Red Cap Hollow.”
Fifth story, from a child in school. A ghost jumps out of casket and two
cars saw it and they had an accident
Sixth story, unsolved cold case-.the murder of Charlie Stahl

Do you have any family Bibles in your possession???? I am attempting to
make a list of Bibles owned by family members. These Bibles hold family
genealogy pages in the middle of the Bible which can be used as proof of
genealogy family lines. In the writings of Emma Timerman, Carolyn
Sidenius , Charles
Markell , David Martin and others-- they list many Bibles ----- but where
are these Bibles now? It would be interesting to put them all in a master
list so if someone needs information on that particular family line for
genealogy, they would be able to get the information. In our genealogy
books that we sell-- there are many referrals to a family Bibles also. A
list could be placed on our web site with this information.
This year is the celebration of ”250 America of 1776”. Oriskany battlefield
is trying to get-some updates on the battlefield. We have a book
“American Patriots
at the Battle of Oriskany” by Vera Dewitt, that gives the patriots at the
battle. It would make a great gift item for family members. We also have
other interesting books that make great gifts which can be found on the
website under the “About Us” then “Publications” tab. They are also
listed below
at the end of this Newsletter.
Happy holidays to you and your families and we hope to see you at the
reunion next year August 24, 2025.
Sincerely,
Bill Timmerman ----president
