Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman Family Reunion Newsletter-----Spring 2023
Hello,
Winter is a cold, snowy memory and it is time to start thinking about
summer activities. The Mohawk
Valley has many events to attend during the spring, summer, and fall
months. So start planning your events that you might want to attend. The
following are some events that will be happening:
Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman family reunion which will be held at our historic
church--Snells Bush Church----- the last Sunday in August--- August 27,
2023---- The SZT board decided to hold the reunion the last Sunday in
August as that was how it originally was scheduled when the reunion was
held from 1938---thru the 1990’s. It was changed in the 1990’s to the first
Sunday in August so members could send their children off to college -- but
today that is not a problem as everyone now goes at their special time to
college--due to sports and various activities. Since our attendance is very
low the board will be trying the last Sunday in August to see if more
members can attend the reunion. We hope more will be able to attend and
visit our historic church on the hill. Whenever you are in the area and
want to visit Snells Bush Church, contact one of the officers and someone
can meet you at the church.
--------Here are some of the events during the season to attend if you are
in the area----------
Oriskany, NY------Commemoration at the Oriskany Battlefield will be held on
August 6, 2023.
With the reunion being held at a different date, this will be easier for
our SZT members to attend the Oriskany Commemoration. It is a wonderful
event to honor our ancestors that fought so valiantly there. Many lost
their lives, or were seriously wounded at that pivotal battle during the
Revolutionary War in 1777. Our ancestors who fought with General Herkimer,
did their part to hold back the forces of the British under Lieut. Col.
Barry St. Leger with his Loyalists and Joseph Brant’s men.
Rome NY-----While in the area Fort Stanwix is a great place to visit. Visit
the fort and see how the soldiers lived there.
Herkimer NY------Take a ride on the Erie Canal and go thru the locks. There
is a place –Gems Along the Mohawk - where one can take a boat ride on the
canal and visit the restaurant and gift shop there. Bicycle and hiking
trails lead east and west along the Canal.
Visit the Herkimer Historical Society and Museum where there is information
on genealogy and history of Herkimer County. Visit Fort Herkimer Church,
which is the second oldest church in the state, and its cemetery.
St Johnsville, NY----Fort Klock is a historic homestead where one can see
how the colonist lived and worked. They have special events and tours going
on all the time. Reany library is another place to visit as there is a
museum there and has many items from the valley and genealogy. Nellis
Tavern will be open on Sundays.
Stone Arabia, NY ----has the historic Kilts homestead--a homestead with
various events during the summer months. Visit the historic Dutch Reformed
Church and Lutheran Church and cemeteries.
Fort Plain, NY--- Fort Plain Museum is a great place to visit and they have
events throughout the season.
Canajoharie, NY---- Canajoharie Arkell Library and Art Museum and the
history of the Beech- nut plant.
Little Falls, NY ----- Little Falls Historical Museum located in the
historic bank building has a collection of history of Little Falls. Also
don’t forget to visit Canal Place where visitors can find restaurants, art
gallery, antique shops, selection of night events and beautiful views of
the canal and river. If you like rock climbing don’t forget to visit Moss
Island, and the lift lock on the canal. Little Falls was the home of the
Cheese industry and each year a Cheese Festival Event is held and also
Canal Celebration, the second week of August and in the fall the Garlic
Festival is held. General Nicholas Herkimer Historic Home and State Park is
a great place to visit- with tours of the General’s 1764 mansion.
Dolgeville, NY---- visit the Dolgeville Historical Society Museum
-----which has local history and the history of Daniel Green slippers
factory and founding of Dolgeville by Alfred Dolge. African violets were
hybridized to develop the first double pink African violet by Lyndon Lyon
in Dolgeville. His greenhouses are managed today by his grandson Paul
Sorano. Each year a Violet festival is held the second week of June with
parades, sports races, garage sales and many other events.
If you have time to visit the cemeteries---- Church Street Cemetery in
Little Falls, Old Yellow Church Cemetery in Manheim-where 50 Rev. War
soldiers are buried, Snells Bush Cemeteries, Indian Castle Cemetery and
church-- Little Falls, Stone Arabia cemeteries and churches, and many
others to find your ancestors’ grave site.
Snells Bush Church is looking good as it sits on the hill over- looking the
valley. Your SZT board is working hard to keep the site in good order but
it takes time, money and work to keep it looking good. Your board members
are getting older each year and need help. Please volunteer to help keep
this site in good order. Come attend our board meetings (spring and fall –
as well as at the Reunion) --we would like your comments.
We have old photos and scrap books filled with reunion information to view.
I have been organizing the history since the start of the reunion in 1938
into booklet form to preserve for the future. We are in the process of
updating a booklet “Faith of our Fathers” written in 1976-- and hope to
have it available at the reunion which this year is our 85th year of the
incorporation. We are attempting to partner with the Dolgeville Historical
society to promote Snells Bush Church and get involved in community events.
We will hold our traditional family reunion at Snells Bush Church August
27, 2023. A dedication to our patriots buried at Snells Bush at 10 am,
traditional church service at 11 am, short business meeting following the
church service, and a catered luncheon to follow-- donations accepted. An
ice cream social will be held Saturday night August 26 at 6 pm. This year
we are having a --TENT SALE--all day Saturday August 26--- 10 am to 4 pm---
as a fundraiser for the church and cemeteries. Donations of small items
will be accepted for the event and all proceeds will go to the fund.
Kevin Jorrey--- our web site master has revamped the site to give it an
updated new look. Please visit the site and let us know your comments. The
site is www.szt-genealogy.org.
We have genealogy books for sale----- They may be old but they have many
interesting facts and stories of the early family members homesteading on
the frontier---- fighting the Indians and becoming friendly with the
Indians. They tell the story of living on the frontier. These books are
great for the younger generations to learn about their heritage.
