NEWSLETTER:
Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman---Summer Newsletter----2023
Reminder---- the SZT family reunion will be held on August 27, 2023 this
year. We are changing the date
from the first Sunday in August to the last Sunday in August. The reunion
was held the last Sunday in
August from 1938------ 1990’s when it was changed. We are now holding it
the last Sunday just like it
was in earlier times. We hope more members will be able to come to the
reunion and visit our
historic Snells Bush Church.
We will hold a tent sale on August 26 from 10 am to 6 pm. Donations will be
accepted for the sale
and all profits will go to the Snells Bush Church as a fundraising event.
At 6 pm Saturday we will hold
our annual ice cream social. It is always great to have an ice cream sundae
and watch the sunset over
the valley. It is so calming and peaceful to just to be there.
It was a sad historic day on June 10, 2023---- Major General Philip
Schuyler statue was torn down.
Mayor Kathy Sheehan of Albany NY said he needed to go as when he lived he
was the biggest slave
owner in Albany. He stood outside city hall and the state capitol building
for over a century.
Description -
The statue was dedicated on June 14 ,1925, donated by George C. Hawley to
honor his wife Theodora.
It is a bronze statue of 114 in tall and 65 inches in diameter resting on a
marble base of approximately
87 inches tall and diameter of 115 inches, and it was designed by J Massey
Rhind a Scottish born
Sculpture. General Schuyler wears a military uniform including a cape and
hat and has his arms
folded in front. An inscription plaque reads:
"presented in loving memory of/ his wife Theodora M Hawley to the/ city of
Albany by George C
Hawley / MCMXXV / Citizens Committee /Hon. Wm S Hackett, Mayor Frank B.
Graves, /Hon.
Wm.E Woollard Dr.Arthur W. Elting, ” (reference--Wikipedia encyclopedia)
Under the statue, the pedestal contained a 1920 time capsule containing
letters from the Schuyler
family, maps, flag and so forth. They can be viewed at the Albany State
Museum.
The Schuyler Mansion overlooks the Hudson River and it was a seat of power
in the city of Albany.
General Schuyler was constantly working with famous people - Ben Franklin,
Alexander Hamilton,
Aaron Burr, and others who worked to shape our country. General Schuyler
was a friend of the Six
Nations, was the leading force for the Battle of Saratoga, served as
senator many times - serving to
create -- the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and other
important documents.
It is sad that our country has decided not to honor these heroes. We -
members of the Snell-Zimmerman-
Zimmerman Family Reunion - need to promote our history and remember all the
struggles that our
ancestors had. Come - visit - your ancestor’s historic Snells Bush Church--
tell your family
members about our history as you are the only one that can influence your
children in our history of
the family reunion and the country.
I hope to see you at the family reunion on August 27, 2023 and we can all
worship together in our
historic Snells Bush Church. You can always contact me at
sarahtisrael at yahoo.com
Sincerely
Sarah Timmerman Israel--- historian
