Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman Family Reunion Sunday August 7, 2022

The Snell-Zimmerman -Timmerman Family Reunion was held August 7, 2022 at
Historic Snells Bush Church. It was the hottest weekend of the summer, even
though we had a small attendance it was a great day. We were very happy to
be able to attend the reunion and church service again. Even after the
covid outbreak, we hope that we will be able to hold many more reunions in
the future. Our ancestors they too had many troubles, even though they all
succeeded in coming together at our Snells Bush Church. We held the ice
cream social on Friday August 5 due to the Battle of Oriskany Commemoration
held on August 6. We wanted people to attend the event at Oriskany from the
SZT family. Because of the Covid , high gas prices, traveling and the high
cost of living some of our members could not attend this year. We did have
members attending from New Mexico, Texas, Georgia and Tennessee as well as
from all over New York State. We hope more will try to come to our historic
church next year to honor our ancestors.

Our ice cream social (only fund raiser that we do) was well attended. The
ice cream is donated by Stewarts Stores and we thank them for their support
to be able to present an ice cream social to the community each year. We
had the privilege to have the Herkimer County Dairy Princess come to help
make ice cream sundaes. The Dairy Princess has a new name--- Dairy
Ambassador. Julia, Ava and Dakota---helped scoop the ice cream for the
sundaes while other family members came to support the Dairy Ambassador at
the event.

The day of the reunion started out with the raising of the flag and the
re-dedication program we have each year to honor our patriots buried at
Snells Bush Church. This year we honored Sefrenus (Suffernus) Snell and
John Joseph (Hanjost) Snell. Hanjost Snell fought in the American
Revolution the entire time and was wounded 7 times. At the Battle of Stone
Arabia, he was wounded twice in one day. Sefrenus Snell was a soldier in
the War of 1812. We discovered that we have never honored him for his
service in that war. In the genealogy book--- “Eighteen Century Snell
Family of the Mohawk Valley” by David Martin, he tells of his service at
Sacketts Harbor. There are many interesting facts in that book and it is
interesting to read about the family members that lived at that time on the
frontier. Sefrenus Snell is buried in the lower Snells Bush Cemetery and
wreath was placed on his grave before the reunion. Hanjost is buried at the
church cemetery and a wreath was placed on his grave. We also honored all
our soldiers that are buried at Snells Bush Cemeteries. Many Snells, Yorans
and Markells are buried in the lower cemetery and it would be nice if
members visited that cemetery. Many other family members are buried in the
Rural Park Cemetery--- just up the road from the church. It is sad that
those that came before us are now forgotten in cemeteries across the
country. Soldiers of the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 were given
bounty land in Jefferson and Lewis counties and other parts in western New
York where the soldiers or their children settled homesteaded there and are
also buried on these lands.

At 11 am the church bell rang to call everyone to the church service. This
year we had a Tom Antonoff, a certified lay speaker lead the service. Nancy
Schuyler was the accompaniment on

the piano and our historic pump organ. Gertrude and Dawn Ortlieb planned
the program and also the music for the church service. We thank them all
for the outstanding job. The flowers were donated by Steve and Judy Sarano
Green House in Gansvoort N Y

Mr. Antonoff opened the service with a call to worship and our traditional
hymn--- “Faith of Fathers” was sung by the congregation. Invocation was
next and the Lord’s Prayer, and Gloria Patria. Gertrude and her daughter
Dawn presented a beautiful song entitled “ As The Deer” for the special
music selection. A silent prayer for the departed came next followed by the
Pastoral prayer. The next hymn was entitled “ In the Garden” which was sung
by the congregation. Scripture reading was Isaiah 1:10-20; Luke 12: 32-40.
A very interesting sermon was presented by Mr. Antonoff, which was based on
the scripture reading. The offering was presented next with the music
entitled “Freely, Freely” presentation by Trudy and Dawn. Doxology was next
followed by a Prayer of Thanksgiving. Our last hymn was entitled “God Be
With You” was a very nice way to end the church service.

A short business meeting was held next and Bill Timmerman-- president
opened the meeting. The secretary Stephanie Timmerman gave the report from
the last meeting. A motion was made and seconded to accept the report.
Treasurer report was next presented by Peter Burkdorf. We are updating our
insurance for the church, getting more insurance for the church and getting
a better price for the insurance. We are going to get another painter to
finish the painting of the steeple as the painter we have been using is
unwell. We are waiting for the window to come back that is out for repair
and then another one will be taken out for repair. A plaque will be placed
in the lobby listing the donations that we receive for various projects. We
appreciate the donations ( ice cream social and donations) we receive as
this is the only way we have to support the Snells Bush Church. Our inhouse
carpenter will be working on handicap entrance and putting replacement
lights in stain glass window at the front of the church. We will again
spray for the powder post beetles under the church; they keep coming. The
mowing is good and the cemeteries look great. We hope to work on resetting
some of the markers that have a lean to them. The reports of reunion
activities though out the years from 1938 till now(2022) are only available
at the Church. We are in the process of putting the reports onto the web
site for safe keeping for the future. They are written in pencil and ink
(they are fading). There are many interesting facts that happened during
those years---till now.

Election of officers was held. Again, we asked for volunteers from the
floor but no- one wanted the job, so again the following will be
re-elected. It was voted on and passed.

President Bill Timmerman

Vice President Sarah Burkdorf

2 directors Sue Vickery and Larry Sekel

Kevin Jorrey from Texas, our web master attended the reunion this
year and he spoke to us about the web site. He would like more information
on stories of the family members for the web. Please send your updates on
e-mails and change of address. We really would like to keep in contact with
everyone. Also please send in your family members (children that have moved
out of your address) to be listed to receive the newsletters. We need to
have young people come to the reunion and get involved, as we are all
getting older and we need help to keep this reunion going.

The meeting was adjoined and everyone was asked to stay seated to hear Ken
Johnson speak on General Nicholas Herkimer and Joseph Brant, how they were
friends and the conflict that came about at Wood creek, Battle of Oriskany.
It was a very interesting presentation. Ken Johnson also placed the
original Lawrence Zimmerman Papers that he just finished researching on his
web site,* Fort Plank.* Please look at it.

A luncheon was served under the tents which was presented by the
S-Z-T Board of officers. Donation were accepted for the lunch. During lunch
we had the pleasure of having Clyde Getman, who was portraying Reverend
Abraham Rosencranz a minister of the Revolutionary War times. Clyde was in
costume of what Reverend Rosencranz what have worn.

A little information about Rev Abraham Rosencranz:

*Abraham Rosencranz ( 1728-1796) . He married in 1758 to Maria Herkimer-
sister **of **General Nicholas Herkimer. Abraham was born in Germany and
was educated there becoming a minister. He came to the valley in 1752 after
his brother a minister at Fort Herkimer died. Abraham served at NYC
1752-1757, Stone Arabia 1759-1772 and at Fort Herkimer Reformed Church from
17631796 with other churches including Snell Bush in the territory from
Schoharie to Fort Stanwix. His genealogy records **of **birth, marriages
and deaths are the only records found as others were destroyed during the
Revolution. He settled in the Fort Herkimer area raised a family and is
buried under the pulpit at Fort Herkimer church.*

We would like to hear from you-- Please send updates on change of mailing
address and e-mail address. We try to keep the address updated. If your
family members would like to receive the newsletter, please send us their
e-mail or mailing address. Donation are always welcome and we have
genealogy books available on the families. They may be a generation or two
behind but these genealogy book hold great information on the early
families and their struggles to live on the frontier.

Check out our website *www.szt-genealogy.org
<http://www.szt-genealogy.org/>* Nancy worked all winter on researching and
writing about the early schoolhouses in the Town of Manheim. She also wrote
earlier about the history of cheese making in Manheim in the” Diary of
Willard Kilts”. I have been copying the minutes of SZT meeting from 1938 to
the present, to be placed on the website. Kevin set up a new page for them
on our website. This is a great place to preserve our history of the
Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman family as we have the only copies of these
important papers.

The following is our contact information and list of genealogy books
available. Sincerely,

Family by extending the known descendants of four sons of Jacob

and Margaretha Schutz Zimmerman (David, Lawrence, George, and

Henry) into the latter part of the 20th century. A fifth book extends

David Martin’s 18th Century Snell Family by continuing the

descendants of Peter Snell into the 20th century.
