SNELL ZIMMERMAN-TIMMERMAN Family Reunion
FALL-WINTER 2019 NEWSLETTER
It seems that winter has come early to the Mohawk Valley because we
had our first snow in the middle of November. We had our SZT board
meeting in late October and put the church to bed for the winter. We
reviewed our accomplishments for this year and made plans for 2020.
Here are some of the highlights from our meeting:
• The new windows on the south side of the building look perfect and
it is fantastic that we can open the windows (it has been years since
we can open the windows).
• Just before the reunion, the windows were correctly rehung with the
proper weights needed so the windows can open. The restored windows
with the original glass look great with the new wood frames, weights,
and ropes.
• We also updated the mowing contract that will reduce our landscaping
cost that will keep our church looking great.
• The painting will continue in the spring when it is warmer. Our
painter does a great job restoring the church by scraping off the old
paint without damaging the siding and applying the proper paint to the
building. The painting is complete for south, west, and north side of
building and the painter is scheduled to finish the east side and
start work on the steeple in the 2020.
• The front shutters were restored and rehung just before the reunion
this summer.
• The building crawl space was sprayed to control the “Powder Puff
Beetle” (post beetles) infestation.
• We also have a new flag which was hung on the flag pole for the
reunion and at the fall meeting the flag was taken down and stored for
the winter.
Projects for 2020
• We will install a portable ramp at the entrance of the church that
can be used for all ours events. It is believed that many of our
members do not attend the reunion because they have difficulty
entering the church. One of our board members is a carpenter and he
will work on this project in the spring.
• Our carpenter will also work on making an access point on the west
side of the church. This access point will allow us to change the
bulbs that light up the stain glass windows on the front of the
church. These windows came from the Old Yellow Church when it was torn
down in the 1960’s and Edith Timmerman (secretary of the reunion at
that time) had the windows installed them in the front of the church
sanctuary. These windows were donated to the Old Yellow Church at a
celebration in 1901 by the Feeter family, Goodell family and the
Pickett family whom are all members of the SZT family.
• When the painter starts working on the steeple, we will need a lift
for him to reach the top on the steeple. While we have the lift for
the work on the steeple, we will also replace the bulbs in the
steeple. The bulbs are eight car head lights in two separate levels
on the steeple.
• We are planning on restoring another sanctuary window during the
winter months. In a few years, we will have them restored. To restore
the window the cost is $3000.
It takes a lot of time and funds to keep our Snells Bush Church in
order and funds are always needed. Currently, the only way that we
receive funds is from donations from our family members and the ice
cream social. There are two ways that you can donate to our church to
keep the reunion going every year. The first is by sending in
donations and the second is to volunteer for a position or run a fund
raising event. We are always looking for new types of fund raisers we
are looking at our younger family members to organize and run the
event.
Future Projects
• We need to restore both cemeteries their glory. The stones need to
be cleaned, straightened, and reset.
• We also looking into restoring our land grant patent that we
received from the Mohawk Indians in 1755, with the seal of King George
III. We are researching the estimated cost and of the patent and it
will be discussed in 2020.
• The fence in the lower cemetery needs rebuilding, some trees have
fallen along the edge of the lower cemetery and in the upper cemetery,
and poison ivy is starting to grow in various places. I remember when
I was a child I was not allowed to walk around the cemetery because it
was full of poison ivy and it seems it is still there.
• Repair the inside walls of the church because some of the plaster
cracked when the building frame was repaired
As usual we have genealogy books available they hold a lot of
information on the early families that lived and worked and attended
Snells Bush Church those many years ago. The stories are wonderful in
these books and every member needs to have copies of these genealogy
books. Tell your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren
about these stories. This is your heritage be proud of it. Also we
need updates on your family history—who died—who got married—and who
is the new arrival in your immediate family. It is important to keep
this information up to date.
Kevin Jorrey our web master would like family stories to put on the
web. We need to put new items on the web—photos as always nice to send
to Kevin. Please also send updates on the genealogy of your family.
The information is only the name put on the web—no other information.
The SZT Family would like to wish everyone happy holidays and please
make plans to come to the family reunion on August 2, 2020 and if you
are in the area please contact us to visit Snells Bush, we will be
happy to open the church for you to visit.
Sincerely
Bill Timmerman President
Sarah Timmerman Israel Corresponding Secretary and Historian
We are always looking for updated contact and family information for
our extended family. We are a family proud of our history and have to
keep younger family members involved. We are constantly getting people
who discover our family on the web, by DNA or people searching for
genealogy. They are very interested in how they are related to our
family.
